RDI Researchers at International Conferences
In September 2014, the RDI team actively participated in two international conferences in Indonesia: the International Symposium on Sustainability Science held in Bandung and the Cities on Volcanoes (CoV) 8 conference in Yogyakarta. Additionally, Dr. Saut Sagala, a fellow at RDI, took part in the International Training Course on Disaster Management of Cultural Heritage at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan.
The first conference, organized by Padjajaran University in Bandung, was attended by four RDI researchers: Elisabeth Rianawati, Efraim Sitinjak, Dodon Yamin, Fernando Situngkir, and Praditya Adhitama. The topics presented during this three-day seminar included:
- Fernando Situngkir presented on "Spatial Model of Wetland Use Change and Flood Occurrence in Residential Areas."
- Dodon Yamin delivered a presentation titled "Household Vulnerability to Environmental Change: Examining Adaptive Capacity of Households in Flood-Prone Areas of Palembang."
- Elisabeth Rianawati, RDI Director, discussed "Wildfires and Climate Change: A Vicious Cycle."
- Efraim Sitinjak introduced a new area of research, focusing on "Resilience and the Sister City Concept in Indonesia for Addressing Climate Change."
- Praditya Adhitama presented research findings on "Green Infrastructure Implementation in the Context of Flood Mitigation, with a Case Study on Flood Canals in Semarang."
The second conference, Cities on Volcanoes 8, saw the participation of two RDI researchers: Ramanditya Wimbardana and Alpian Angga Pratama. This conference, organized by The International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) in collaboration with Gajah Mada University, the Geological Agency (Ministry of Energy and Mineral), Sleman Regency, and Yogyakarta Province, aimed to disseminate research related to the Merapi Volcano. The presentations included:
- Ramanditya Wimbardana's research on "Community Resilience for Recovering from Economic Losses after the 2010 Eruption of Mount Merapi, Indonesia," which investigated the economic recovery of local communities affected by the 2010 eruptions around Mount Merapi.
- Alpian Angga Pratama's presentation on "Networks and Innovation in Tourism Villages as Strategies for Coexisting Harmoniously with Active Volcanoes," with a case study focused on Pentingsari village tourism in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research explored the role of various actors in innovation and networking for managing tourism villages in harmony with active volcanoes.
Dr. Saut Sagala attended the Training Course on Disaster Management of Cultural Heritage at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan, from September 6th to 22nd, 2014. This training aimed to enhance institutional capacity in formulating comprehensive risk management plans tailored to the characteristics of cultural heritage and the specific hazards in regional contexts. Dr. Saut Sagala presented Gedung Sate, a heritage building in Bandung, West Java, as a case study for disaster management of cultural heritage in Indonesia. During this training, he engaged with experts in disaster management and cultural heritage from various countries, including Ecuador, New Zealand, Croatia, among others, sharing valuable experiences and insights.
