To introduce the "Making Displacement Safer" (MDS) initiative and address the issue of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) resulting from disasters in Indonesia, the Resilience Development Initiative (RDI) organized a national workshop titled "Enhancing the Safety of Displacement: Resilience of Disaster-Affected Communities in Urban Indonesia" on October 4, 2021. This event comprised a presentation and discussion session, drawing participation from diverse stakeholders including government representatives, academics, and NGOs. While IDP management received commendation, there is a growing recognition of the need to humanize IDPs and address their socio-economic challenges.
On November 5, 2021, RDI convened a partnership meeting with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Garut Regency, aimed at fostering relationships and trust among key stakeholders.
Between November 6 and 8, 2021, the RDI team conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) in both Hunian Tetap Babakan Carik and Cigadog Relocation Site as part of the exploratory phase of the Urban Living Labs initiative. As a global think tank, the Resilience Development Initiative is committed to continuing its support for researchers worldwide in developing new theories and advancing knowledge. RDI remains open to fellowship and partnership programs as a means of contributing to knowledge development.
The Living Labs implementation employed various tools, including Asset-based Community Development (ABCD), Heart Hand Mind Tool, SWOT Partnership analysis, Power Mapping, and the Social Business Model Canvas. Ultimately, both displaced communities were able to devise implementation plans. For instance, Cigadog formulated plans for enterprise funding, while Hunian Tetap Babakan Carik explored cooperation with a waste bank business.
To follow through with these plans, RDI conducted the Urban Living Labs - Exploration and Implementation Activity from December 3 to 5, 2021. During this period, the team engaged with the Garut Regency Cooperatives and Garut Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to discuss and develop durable solutions. Subsequently, the team worked closely with both communities to detail the plans and implementation strategies. Both communities have now established implementation timelines spanning three months to ensure targeted and effective execution.
In summary, the Urban Living Labs (ULL) initiative has empowered each community to formulate and implement suitable durable solutions. These advocacy efforts undertaken by RDI through the MDS project have significantly contributed to enhancing and supporting disaster displacement management resilience in Indonesia.
