Speaker : Dr. Ayu Krishna
Institution : University of Education, Bandung Indonesia

Dr. Ayu Krishna, cluster chair of Tourism and Cultural Heritage Cluster visited RDI to give a lecture safe school for disaster risk reduction in Indonesia. Indonesia is very prone to natural disaster since its geographical location is at the juncture of three tectonic plates, namely Indo Australia Plate, Eurasia and the Pacific, consequently potential to cause earthquake when plates collide.

In this lecture, Dr. Ayu Krishna talked about her involvement on the implementation of Safe School concept in Indonesia. The Safe School program in Indonesia is supported and executed by Ministry of Education and Culture under the name SMAB (Sekolah Madrasah Aman Bencana). It is one of GoI’s efforts to reduce disaster risk in Indonesia through disaster education and improvement of education facilities’ structures in order to minimize the impact of hazard when it strikes.

Schools appointed as Safe School are the ones located in areas with high disaster risk. The school buildings must then conform to the appointed building codes from structure, evacuation infrastructures, school safety rules, etc.
