On Saturday, 7 October 2017, in commemoration of Dies Natalis 60th of Universitas Padjadjaran, Institute of Ecology University of Padjajaran organizing an "International (Outdoor) Seminar on Eco-development" that was held in Bosscha Observatory, Lembang. RDI researchers were invited to join that event. This event also held as part of tribute to Prof. Otto Soemarwoto, a prominent pioneer and scholar in the field of Environment from Universitas Padjajaran.


Prof. Otto Soemarwoto, with his colleagues were sent as part of scholar delegations in UN Conference of Human Environment in Stockholm in 1972. In that event, Prof. Otto Soemarwoto and his colleagues raised a new concept of development "Eco-development", that means ecologically sound development which is striving to achieve harmony instead of making conflict between man and nature, an between society and physical environment. The idea of eco-development had developed forward and adopted in various conventions and institutions, among others; UNEP in 1973, WCED (World Commision on Environment and Development) in 1983, and Brutland Commission in 1987. A matter of fact, Prof. Otto Soemarwoto and his thought was inspiring and influential in worldwide scale.


The seminar were discussed the challenges of eco-development in context of policy, strategy and practices. The speakers among others; H Deddy Mizwar (Vice-Governor of West Java Province), Chay Asdak, M.Sc., Ph.D (IoE UNPAD), Prof. Maria Victoria Espaldon (UPLB The Phillipines), Dr. Laura Franco-Garcia (University of Twente, Netherlands), Arief Anshory Yusuf, SE., M.Sc., Ph.D. (SDGs Center UNPAD), Prof. Jon C. Lovett (Leeds University, United Kingdom), and Prof. Shahbaz Khan (UNESCO Regional Asia & Pacific Australia).
