On 26th of October 2018, RDI conducted Bandung Energy Sustainability Symposium. The symposium began with the welcoming speech from the Secretary of Industrial Engineering, Department of Widyatama University. The symposium divided into five lectures and moderated by Jeeten Kumar.
The first lecture was presented by Dr. Yudha Prambudia with the topic of Widyatama Recent Activities, Research on Urban Energy Security. Dr. Yudha presentation discuss about recent urban energy researches by Widyatama University. The first is about the power from abattoir's biogas in Bandung. The second is about the electricity consumption behavior generated from awareness and decision on purchasing appliances. The third research is related with the framework for evaluating energy security, especially in Bandung. Recently, Widyatama is still developing another proposal related to 24/7 household power consumption monitoring by image recognition technology.
The symposium was then followed with another lecture from Dr. Saut Aritua Hasiholan Sagala about his recently published paper titled: "The Pursuit of Greenness: Explaining Low Carbon Urban Transformation in Indonesia" The study locations of his paper, as explained in the lecture are Balikpapan and Palembang. The public policy and planning; vertical and horizontal collaboration; infrastructure and sustainable mobility; and knowledge creation and utilization perspectives are used in this study accompanied with SWOT analysis. Lessons learned from this study are cities should have initiative in order to collaborate with central government and other institutions; the low carbon strategies should be embedded in urban planning; and education & public participation are necessary to support the implementation of low carbon urban transformation.
The third lecture presented by Dr. Yuti Ariani was titled "Design and implementation in action: a case of energy self-sufficient village in Central Java" This study is related to how the government design and do the realization of the policy on energy sufficient villages. The main findings are (1) there is non-linearity between design of protective space and the practices it prescribes; (2) the linearity has not reached between the national and local context; (3) adopting a stretch and transform strategy from the beginning do not necessarily result in successful deployment and growth of radical innovations; (4) each actors interpret the project differently, and; (5) central government cannot capture the dynamic while the local environment can not accommodate the government design.
The fourth lecture was presented by Dr. Aldi Martino Hutagalung from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia. The presentation was mainly about the oil and gas policy within the policy maker point of view. Mr. Aldi explained about the dynamics and challenges of the oil and gas policy. The further explanation also covered that Indonesia has now shifted to the gross split PSC. He emphasized that oil and gas pricing and policy are a complicated matter because creating balance in order to accommodate the various interests and other political issues are often a challenging task.
Dr. Cheng Wen from the University of Leeds were the speaker for the last lecture. He discussed about the socio-economics of resilient sustainable mini-grids in developing countries. The presentation covered the research background, framework, and then the assumption of the model village and the research progress. The SDGs goal 7, the accessibility of electricity, and the great potential for mini-grids have led Leeds University to collaborate with other countries such as Uganda and Indonesia (RDI). This project has the objective to design methodology for resilient sustainable mini-grids that apply to a model "Energy Smart" village of inhabitants. The project has conducted fieldworks and several meetings. Further, the project will not only addressing the technology aspect but also the socio-economics aspect.
The lectures then followed with the question and answer sessions. The symposium had reached the conclusion that in order to create the sustainable energy, the vertical and horizontal collaboration need to be supported together with the policy adoption and knowledge creation.
