In recent years, the threats of climate change and greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted from the use of fossil fuel have resulted in worldwide interest in utilizing biomass as feedstock to produce heat and electricity. The ASEAN countries generate millions of cubic meters of agricultural waste products annually that have the potentials to be tapped for bioenergy production. Biomass is very beneficial and sustainable as it is always available and can be reproduced as a renewable energy. In addition, the usage of bio-oil for energy source and feedstock for chemical production would serve as a key role in creating both urban and rural development that creates employment, reduces poverty, and establishes self-reliant communities with positive impact on the environment. This fact calls for the development of alternative technologies for the production of renewable energy from biomass found in ASEAN geographical locations. Consequently, this could also lead to the introduction of biomass fed furnaces, boilers, and stoves for industrial and residential heating applications.
Studies have shown that lignocellulosic biomass can be converted to bioenergy using thermochemical and biochemical process such as fermentation, pyrolysis, and gasification. This research finds that pyrolysis technology for syngas, bio-oil, and solid fuel production is the most promising for bioenergy production. However, there are still limited studies on the use of natural source of catalysts in pyrolysis that resulting in wide knowledge gaps in terms of optimum process conditions and efficiency. Hence, this research aims to address this gap of catalytic pyrolysis process. Furthermore, this research will look at Malaysia and Indonesia as case studies from ASEAN member states (AMS) as well as Japan to stimulate interest on the use of agricultural residue for bioenergy production and mitigate solid waste disposal problem in ASEAN countries. To sum it up, this research will highlight new technologies related to biomass energy which is aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the category of climate action.
