Strengthening Child Resilience with Disaster Risk Reduction and Social Protection
The Resilience Development Initiative (RDI) conducted a rapid risk assessment as part of Save the Children's project focused on integrating disaster risk reduction, social protection, and child protection. This assessment took place over several periods between August and December 2016, covering various locations within Cianjur.
The specific areas visited included Karangtengah subdistrict, Campaka subdistrict, Cibinong subdistrict, and Cikalongkulon subdistrict, each characterized by distinct issues and features. To gather data, RDI organized focused group discussions at different levels, ranging from the district and village levels to schools. Additionally, interviews were conducted with various stakeholders, including local government officials, village administrators, beneficiaries, and community members.
The assessment revealed that Cianjur district faces numerous challenges stemming from natural hazards and child protection issues, with these concerns overlapping. Child protection issues in the district have reached an alarming state, showing an increasing trend in recent years. It has become imperative to incorporate disaster risk reduction and enhance community resilience to mitigate the impacts of disasters. This encompasses addressing the effects of not only natural disasters but also the social vulnerabilities embedded within the community.
In addressing these challenges, the existing social protection system has played a partial role in providing a sense of security and contributing to the resilience of children and families in Cianjur. However, its success has been limited due to the high magnitude of social challenges prevalent in the area.
