Background :
Sinabung volcano, Sumatera, had its first eruption in 1,200 years in 2010 and has been in a period of almost continuous eruption since then, exhibiting intermittent explosions and lava dome/flow collapses. These events have generated large ash clouds which have coated surrounding towns and villages in fine particulate deposits. Such volcanic ash has the potential to trigger both acute and chronic respiratory symptoms. We are particularly concerned about community exposures in this location since lava domes are known to generate the potentially toxic mineral crystalline silica (usually known as quartz, but here the mineral is likely to be the polymorph cristobalite) and exposures have been prolonged. To our knowledge, no assessment has been conducted on the respiratory health hazard of the ash and little is known, outside of North Sumatera, about how local agencies have responded to the crisis in terms of provision of information on the potential hazard or suitable protective measures. Additionally, little is known about other impacts that the ash may be having on the environment, such as contaminating water supplies and farmland.
As educational and research institutions that focus on disaster research, Durham University (through the Institute of Hazard, Risk & Resilience), RDI (Resilience Development Initiative), the British Geological Survey and North Sumatera University will conduct a workshop in North Sumatera University, a partner institution of RDI, and a field visit to Sinabung. This activity is good for exchanging ideas, points of view, and solutions that make it possible to reduce the impact of the Sinabung volcano disaster through research.
